CFC Sector Leaders Explained ANCOP to GK Project Directors

Our Sector Leader in Couples for Christ West B Sector explained ANCOP last night to GK Project Directors. It started with songs of praise and worship. What followed was an open and spirit-filled discussion. Questions were freely thrown in and answers were kindly laid down.

Bro Arnel Santos, CFC West B Sector Head and former GK Project Director of one of the sector's 36 GK sites, answered questions and concerns from GK Project Directors present. Beside him was Bro Jan Crisol, Gawad Kalinga West B Sector Coordinator.
Everyone went home afterwards with lifted morale. It was not because all questions were answered. But it was because of the fact that such a meeting occurred at all! And with quite an impressive attendance at that! Anxieties, confusions and frustrations were expressed and assurances were given.

Two lines remained drawn, which the meeting helped everyone to accept:
  1. GK is no longer a CFC ministry. What CFC implements now is ANCOP.
  2. There is only one chain of command that every CFC leader must defer to: the chain that emanates from the CFC International Council
Bro Jan Crisol, GK West B Coordinator (left) and Bro Arnel Santos, West B Sector Head (right)

With these lines clearly drawn, a CFC leader is expected to know and accept the consequences of crossing the line. Indeed we have sad stories of well-respected CFC leaders who were removed from key CFC posts for not toeing the line. We love them still, make no mistake; but they can't lead in CFC.

What replaces the vacuum after GK is the spirit that led us all to GK in the first place. The work for the poor remains, and it shall assume its original name: ANCOP. At this time it is a concept that needs some flesh. Well, so was GK when we started.

All this does not mean that GK is now being thrown out the window. Far from it. It has been moved from the hub to one of the spokes of the wheel of God's work for the poor in CFC.

What rings in my mind after that meeting was the International Council sentiment echoed by our Sector leader (a former GK Project Director himself): We cannot subcontract the work for the poor. But we maintain -- and expand -- our ties with those who help us in this work.

  1. AMEN! Praise God for this good news tito! Let's continue to pray for the council together with the BoEs, EA and the ANCOP Leaders. Let us also pray for those who have decided to leave CFC :) And as for GK...

  2. If indeed the intention of ANCOP is PURE to help the poor, why compete with GK? There are many avenues in helping the poor. Actually, there are still millions of poor Filipinos who need help. Why not just divide the work and collaborate with GK? Does IC have a grand plan to kill GK? Why not just create new sites?
Let's not forget that we are Christians doing good works with the poor. GK is God's work with the poor. ANCOP as the IC said is a work with the poor too. If you combine two good works ineque same areas doing the same programs will surely create fear, confusions, hatred and even threats to both volunteers and GK residents. Again, If the IC's intention is true in helping the poor, why divide GK? I need answers. Thanks and God Bless.

  3. Hello CFC GK Volunteer, your questions resonate well in me. Once upon a time I struggled with these questions. I wrote a separate post about your questions here: http://www.coolcatholics.org/2010/03/cfc-gk-volunteer-expressed.html

  4. Dear Marvin,
I would like to share some insights regarding your reply to my question.
It is in your website that you created.

Please bear with me the length and the divided versions of my post. I hope you would understand my feeling of what is it to be on the other side of the river. But I am not a confused nor a hardcore GK volunteer. I am only a simple Follower of Christ sharing the love and sacrifices that He gave to me on the Cross 2,000 years ago.

    Thanks and God Bless!
